The pond is a jewel in the Echo Hill South community. Children
congregate there to hunt for tadpoles, crayfish and salamanders. Dragonflies and
damselflies hover to lay their eggs on the reeds of the surrounding shoreline.
Treefrogs chirp to welcome the coming spring. Bullfrogs croak in late spring with a pond brimming to overflow. In June the flowers of the pond include the blue swamp iris. Immature cardinal flower are also growing tall but hide their glory looking at this point like common green weeds. Later, as summer's heat makes the water's edge retreat, mature Cardinal flower dot the shore and water lilies float on the open water during the
annual cycle of the ponds ecology. Wood ducks raised their brood
in the recesses of the back pond area. Great blue and green heron
provide entertainment at quiet times as they hunt for frogs and
other prey.
A
mom mallard and 5 ducklings, apparently from our adjacent marsh appeared on our pond May 25. How long will they survive this year?
Despite leash-law dogs and wild predators are at work.
Amid all this, Echo Hill South residents and guest artists enjoy the wild surrounds.
