Inland steel building

tower#00232

This sparkling tower of stainless steel and
glass is modernism at its best, a shimmering diamond
of structure and space. In an audacious gesture, no longer permitted
by building codes, the architects relegated the
elevators and service functions to a windowless steel-clad tower
to the east. Removing these elements from their traditional
location gave the building very large uninterupted spaces,
a great example of Mies Van Der Rohe's 'Universal Space.'
Designed by SOM, this was one of the first buildings of the
new era of Modernism.
