OKLAHOMA CITY - A "Black Pledge of Allegiance" on the Web site of an Oklahoma school district is sparking anger. Milwood Public Schools superintendent Gloria Griffin said the pledge was included in a handbook where students keep track of assignments. Griffin said she isn't sure of the source of the pledge, and that it is not recited at school.
She said the pledge was found by students a couple of years ago, and they asked if it could be included in the assignment book.
Griffin said she has been swamped with angry e-mails, some of them racist in nature. She said it never occurred to her that some people might interpret the pledge as advocating Black separatism. Griffin said the source of the pledge is being researched and it may be removed.
The pledge reads:
"We pledge allegiance of the red, black and green, our flag, the symbol of our eternal struggle, and to the land we must obtain, one nation of black people with one God for us all, totally united in the struggle for black Love, black freedom and black determination."
