Religion, Government, & The People... |
I was watching "The O'Reilly Factor" the other night and Barry Lynn with the group "Americans United for the Separation of Church and State" happened to be the guest. The topic was, of all things, singing Christmas carols in school, and whether or not it should be allowed because they contain a religious slant, most definitively, Christian. Barry claimed that nothing pertaining to Christmas, or any religion, should be allowed in a public, government funded or based building, especially a school. One case that comes to mind as of recent newsworthiness is the one of the school that had the Declaration of Independence removed from it's 5th grade classroom because it contained the word God in it. The class of people like Barry, and the groups he supports and drives forward and other people who bring cases forward like it to our courts are so shortsighted that they are cutting off their noses to spite their faces. Well, not if you're on the other side of the fence from Barry... Because if you take what Barry was saying, (and don't take what I said as an exact quote), look up his site, and other's like his to find out for yourself. If you take the full depth of what he was trying to convey in his message, it was that in no way, whether it was through speech, pictures, a physical object, such as a Christmas tree, anything that has grown to represent Christmas and in parallel any reflection of the Christian holiday of Christmas, if the extremists have their way, it will not be allowed. As a matter of fact, it will not even be allowed to be known as the "Christmas Holidays", all that would be allowed to be said, or printed for that matter on calendars, would be "Happy Holidays". "nothing pertaining to Christmas, or any religion, should be allowed in a public, government funded or based building..." What about Government funded artworks? O.K., simple enough. But it seems they forgot one area that liberals seem to be willing to give extravagant leniencies in; and that area being in the field of ART. If a Christian were to take a manger scene, and present it as a piece of artwork, where would the liberals stance be on funding, on placing this "artwork" in a government owned museum while on display, and in funding this artist for his/her work? They seem to have no trouble in funding anti-Christian art, or artists who "create" such work, nor displaying their "work". |
