Two Barns Razed, Dwelling Damaged In Washburn Fire

Spectacular Blaze at Sunny Brook Feed Farm; $12,000 Loss

(Special to The Bangor Daily News) WASHBURN, Aug. 27 [1939] - Two substantial barns were destroyed and a house damaged at the Sunny Brook farm of Wallace Woodman, local potato dealer, in a mid-afternoon fire today. Hundreds of persons were attracted to the spectacular blaze and the huge smoke column was seen in Perth, N. B., many miles away.

The owner estimated his loss at $12,000, covered by insurance.

The fire departments of Washburn, Presque Isle, and Mapleton were under great handicaps in bringing the fire under control and saving most of the dwelling. The engines quickly pumped dry a nearby brook, and the firemen were forced to break a dam in the stream further up in order to have sufficient water for the hoses.

A few pigs and some machinery and ahy were destroyed in the fire, but the personal belongings and furniture of the home were saved. The cause of the fire was unknown. 1
