Steves Held For Death Of Frank McDuff

CARIBOU, March 31 [1946] -- Frank McDuff, 57 of Washburn was drowned in an automobile accident Saturday morning at 3:16 on the Washburn road about two miles from Caribou, when the car owned by Osborne Stairs and believed to have been driven by Kenneth Steves of Caribou, went through the railing, off the bridge into Caribou stream pinning McDuff under the car. When the Caribou fire department and state policeman Rufus Bernard were called to the scene McDuff was reported dead.

The other two occupants of the car escaped with minor injuries and a good shaking up. The driver who was under the influence of intoxicating liquor, was going at a fast rate of speed and instead of making the curve, the car went off the road, ripped up several guard posts, and rolled over the embankment into the half frozen stream wrecking the car. Kenneth Steves was arrested for manslaughter and a hearing was held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the municipal court before Judge Irvine Peterson. Probable cause was found and Steeves was bound over to the April grand jury in Houlton under a $2,000 bond. Frank McDuff, a barber, is survived by his wife, Nellie, eight daughters: Mrs. Mary Marr, Mrs. Violet McIntosh, Mrs. Elsie Clayton, Mrs. Margaret Campbell, Mrs. Francis Beaulieu and Mrs. Wilda Spooner, all of Washburn; Mrs. Nellie Umphrey of St. Albans and Mrs. Irene Spooner of Presque Isle, one brother George McDuff of Prince Edward Island. 1
