Washburn Honors Veteran Teacher

Everett Cunningham

Washburn residents honored Everett Cunningham, for the past 25 years teacher of vocational agriculture in Washburn High school, when nearly 500 attended the annual alumni banquet and program Tuesday evening in observance of "Everett Cunningham Day."

A feature of the celebration was the presentation to the honored guest of a 1948 Oldsmobile four-door sedan, a gift from the towns people. Harry Umphrey spoke on behalf of the community and presented the gift. The Maine Deprtrtment of Education was represented by Philip Annis, and Prescott Thorhton, agriculture teacher at Limestone High school, spoke on behalf of the Aroostook School-man's club and the agricultural teachers of the county, many of whom were present at the banquet and program. Smith McIntire of the Maine Extension Service, a former pupil of Mr. Cunningham, was master of ceremonies. Prayer was offered at the opening of the program by the Rev. Read Blackstone of Perham.

Mrs. Leila Bull presented corsages to Mrs. Everett Cunningham, wife of the honored guest, and Mrs. Charles Cunningham, his mother, Harry Fox of Wade, on behalf of the alumni association, expressed the appreciation of the graduates of Washburn High school for Mr. Cunningham's untiring efforts on behalf of the school and its students during the past quarter century, and the hope that he would continue as a teacher in the school for many years to come. Music was furnished by the high school's popular orchestra. Several members of Mr. Cunningham's family, including his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cunningham of Patten, were guests at the 'silver' jubilee observance.

Everett Cunningham is a cousin of Franklin S. Cunningham, who recently was honored at a testimonial dinner here celebrating completion of twenty-five years as principal of Presque Isle High Both were residents of Patten and Everett Cunningham was appointed agriculture teacher at Washburn High school in 1923, the same year that Franklin Cunningham was named Principal of Presque Isle High School. 1
