County Medical Examiner Dr. Arthur P. Reynolds of Presque Isle, said the child died of a fractured skull. She was dead on arrival at the hospital there.
Washburn police Chief Wilmot J. Churchill said the accident occurred at 6:15 o'clock after the
child apparently jumped into the path of a car.
The girl would have celebrated her fourth birthday June 3. She was identified by Churchill as the daughter of Reginald and Shirley Martin. The family lives about a mile from Washburn on the Caribou Road. Martin is employed by the J. R. Cianchette Construction Company at Loring Air Force Base.
A passing motorist, Duane Valley of Caribou, left his wife and children at the scene and drove the injured girl to the Gould Memorial Hospital.
State police identified driver of the car as A-1C Eugene Comitz of Loring AFB, assigned for duty, with a Perham A. A. C. S. Unit. Chief Churchill said he believed the driver was a resident of Crouseville, near Washburn, and a Pennsylvania native.
State Police Sgt. Burt Coffin and Trooper Fred Crocker were among those investigating.
