State police said Lester Brewer, about 64, was found lying on the ground beside his car, which had become stuck in a snow bank on the Caribou Lake Road.
An unidentified man found the body in mid-afternoon and telephoned Dr. Flo Frenette of Washburn. Dr. Frenette summoned authorities.
Police said Brewer, a salesman for the Northern Sales' and Service car agency in Caribou, was apparently taking a short cut on the narrow dirt road to Washburn. Winds were heavy, they said, and the road was drifted with snow.
Snow plows from either end of the road, at Caribou and Washburn, had to clear a path in order for authorities to get to the scene. Authorities said the man had been dead for about two hours before they arrived.
Brewer is survived by his wife, Adeline. The couple had no children, police said.
The body was taken to Graves Funeral Home in Presque Isle.
He was born at Washburn December 14, 1897, son of Thomas I. and Jane (Flewelling) Brewer. He had lived here all his life and was a member of the Conservative Baptist Church of Washburn.
