WADE MAN INJURED IN CRASH

[9-17-1963]

WASHBURN-- A 52-year-old Wade man was hospitalized at Presque Isle early Tuesday morning after he was blinded by the rising sun and his car crashed into a parked farm truck on the Caribou Road.

State police said Harold Churchill was thrown from his 1952 sedan onto the highway about 6:45 a.m. when the car ran under the rear of the farm truck. The truck, owned by George Howard of Washburn, was parked on Route 164, on the shoulder of the highway.

Trooper Ormand Trask said the truck was parked far enough off the highway, Churchill just didn't see it.

Dr. Lewis McDonald of Washburn said Churchill received a concussion and multiple lacerations. He was taken to A.R. Gould Memorial Hospital.

The sedan, valued at about $200, was declared a total loss. About $200 in damages was caused to the housing and springs of the farm truck.

Trask said if Churchill had had a passenger with him it is possible that the passenger would have been killed. He said the right hand door was ripped off, the roof crushed and the body of the truck crashed through the windshield. 1
