PRESQUE ISLE - A Washburn father of four was reported in "satisfactory" condition at A. R. Gould Memorial Hospital Sunday after a bundle of veneer weighing an estimated 1,800 pounds had fallen on him Saturday while at work here.
Dr. Arthur P. Reynolds said the victim received crushing injuries.
City Police Chief Watson E. Burlock reported that Sterling Wilcox was operating a fork lift containing three bundles of veneer, apparently stacking it in a storage hanger at Indian Head Plywood Corp., when the mishap occurred in the afternoon.
The officer said the top bundle of the three tipped over and fell on Wilcox, pinning him onto the seat of the machine he was operating until another lift could be employed to remove the veneer bundle that had fallen, in a matter of minutes.
Plant Manager G. R. Anson estimated that the bundle which pinned Wilcox weighed about 1,800 pounds and that the accident occurred about 1:15 p.m.
