MARS HILL -- Miss Gladys Knox of Mars Hill is retiring from the teaching profession after 47 years of teaching.
Miss Knox was born at Knoxford, N. B. She came to Mars Hill at the age of seven. She was educated in the schools of Mars Hill and graduated from Aroostook Central Institute in 1916. In the summer of 1916, Miss Knox attended summer school at Aroostook State Normal School, In the fall she taught at the Wing School which was located behind Mars Hill Mountain. This school closed for the winter months so she then went to the Jones School located on the Fort Fairfield Road. She taught there for two years.
In 1918 she returned to Aroostook State Normal School and graduated in 1920. She then went to Bridgewater, where she taught for three years. After returning to Mars Hill in 1923, she taught in the same building for 42 years. During this time she has taught grades 4, 1, 3, and her present position, second grade.
It is estimated that during her career she has taught 1500 children. Many times there have been three generations in the same family as her students.
One of the school buildings has been dedicated in her honor and is called the Knox Wing.
She has been very active in the Parent Teacher Association since it was organized here. Also, Miss Knox attended the National Education Association in Detroit, Mich., as a delegate from Aroostook.
To keep up-to-date with new methods in teaching, she has taken courses through the University of Maine and Aroostook State Teachers College.
Along with her many teaching duties, she finds time for activities in the church and community. Miss Knox has served as treasurer of the United Baptist Church for 30 years. Several times she has spoken for the local clubs, such as Rotary, Activity and Women's Clubs, giving highlights of her teaching career.
June 13 has been set aside to honor Miss Knox. A public reception will be held at her building from 2 to 5 p.m.
