The state police identified the victim as George T. Seward Jr., and said they arrested Vaughn L. Ankeney, 22, Loring AFB for assault in connection with the case and that Ankeney was being held on a warrant at the Caribou jail, without bail.
Police alleged the pair had been involved in a fight at the Crossroads Restaurant on the access highway about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, and that an investigation in the case was continuing. Reports stated that Seward was taken to the USAF Hospital at Loring because it is the nearest to the restaurant.
Members of Seward's family reported that he was on the danger list at the military hospital with a head injury.
Assisting State Troop McCormick in an investigation are State Trooper David Armstrong and Limestone Police Chief Thomas McKenney.
A Loring Air Force Base Hospital spokesman said Thursday night that Seward had received multiple skull fractures and was "very seriously ill."
