McGaughy was born in Newburgh, N.B., Jan. 22, 1901, the son of Frederick and Ida (Brooker) McGaughy.
He was Superintendent of School Union 119 from 1952 until 1968 when he retired. From 1938 until 1951, McGaughy had been Superintendent of Schools in Washburn. Previously he taught
school in Washburn and Presque Isle.
He served in the Maine House of Representatives in 1937-38 from Presque Isle, was secretary-treasurer of the Blaine Superintendents' Association, from 1945 to 1951, and President of the association from 1951 to 1952.
He was a former Rotarian in Washburn and in Mars Hill, having served as president of both clubs. He was a charter member of the Presque Isle Abnaki Club and was president of the club in 1936.
McGaughty was a member of the Mars Hill Methodist Church.
Surviving are his widow. Mrs. Irene (Knowles) McGauthy of Mars Hill; a son, the Rev. Lane
McCaughy, Missoula, Mont.; a daughter, Mrs. James (Lind) Frutchey, Middlesex, N.J.: two brothers, Willard of Framingham, Mass., and Frank of Presque Isle; three sisters, Mrs. J. Humphrey (Ethel) McCormack, Narragansrtt, R.I., Mrs, Arthur (Easler) Anderson, Needham, Mass., Mrs. Willa Bragdon of Presque Isle, and three grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Graves Funeral Home in Mars Hill Wednesday from 7-9 p.m.
Funeral services will he held at Mars Hill Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. Victor Mask, Superintendent of the Augusta District Methodist Church, officiating.
Burial will he in Pierce Cemetery in Mars Hill.
