Washburn Man Is "Fair" After Crash

WASHBURN - Reported in fair condition at A. R. Gould Hospital Monday night was Alfred J. Daigle, 62, of Washburn following a truck-car collision on Route 161 here Monday morning.

Police said that Daigle, the operator of an eastbound sedan was apparently stricken and his vehicle hit the tractor - trailer nearly head-on at or near the centerline of the highway.

The truck driver, Herbert C. Hunt, 27, of Thomaston, Conn., told police he noticed Daigle slumped over the wheel just before the crash. Hunt was uninjured in the mishap, police said.

Hospital officials declined to disclose the nature of the stricken man's illness or injuries, except to say that he was in fair condition.

Investigating officials said that Daigle's sedan, valued at $1,400 was a total wreck, and that $2,000 damage was estimated to the truck.

Investigating the accident was State Police Trooper Arlo Lund, assisted by Washburn Police Chief Kenneth Espling.
