Honor Students Chosen At Scholastic Assembly

WASHBURN -- During a scholastic achievement assembly held Friday noon at Washburn District High School Gymnasium, Principal, Dana F. Hews announced the honor parts for the graduating class of 1970.

Named valedictorian was Kathaleen Anne Porter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Porter, of Washburn. Kathy has been a French Club member for three years; a Student Council member for three years; member of the Northland Board for two years. She was assistant editor of the year book her junior year and editor her senior year, a member of the school band for four years; a member of the girl's basketball team for four years; co-captain of girl's basketball her senior year; elected to the National Honor Society her junior year and vice president her senior year: a member of the senior play cast; participated in Junior Exhibition speaking; president of the student council her senior year; was vice president of her class her sophomore year.

Kathy received a special award in U.S. History in her freshman year; medals in French and English in her junior year; was a representative to Girl's State her junior year. She attended the Summer Program for High School Juniors at the University of Maine, in Orono, where she completed courses in "History of Western Europe and "Animal Biology". She has been accepted at the University of Maine, Orono, College of Arts and Sciences, majoring in medical technology.

Susan Mona Flewelling, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edrick Flewelling of Crouseville, has been selected salutatorian.

Susan has been member of the French Club for two years; Glee Club member for one year; a member of the All Aroostook Chorus for one year; member of the Journalism Club and president her senior year; elected to the National Honor Society her junior year and President her senior year; a member of the school band for four years. She has been pianist with the band for three years, was assistant business manager of the Northland her junior year and business manager her senior year; a member of the senior play cost; participated in freshman-sophomore speaking contest and was a member of the Tri-Hi-Y Club for one year. She has been accepted for nurses training at the New England Baptist Hospital School of Nursing, in Boston, Mass.

Sarah Jane Bull, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arden Bull, will give the First Honor Essay. She has been a member of the French Club for one year; a member of the Northland Board for two years; a member of the Tri-Hi-Y Club for two year; was a home room captain for the magazine campaign and assisted in the principal's office for two years. She has been accepted at Aroostook State College in Presque Isle, majoring in elementary education.

Others achieving high honors and presented with certificates during the assembly were Miss Sylvia J. Conley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Conley, of Washburn; Robert Blackstone, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hartson Blackstone Jr., of Perham, who plans to attend Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, I11.; Miss Janet Lynn Duncan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hanford Duncan, of Washburn, who has been accepted for nurses' training at the Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor; Floyd A. Drost, son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Drost Sr., of Washhurn; Miss Bonnie Rowena Maynard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Maynard of Washburn, who has been accepted at Bob Jones University, Greenville, S. C., to major in Home Economics; Miss Kristin Chapman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Chapman, of Washburn, who has been accepted at Husson College, Bangor: Miss Janice Drake, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Drake, of Washburn, who plans to attend the Twin City School of Beauty Culture, Brewer.

Robert Arnold Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Davis, RFD #2, Presque Isle, who has been accepted to the University of Maine, Orono; and Kathie Marie Helstrom, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Helstrom, RFD #1, Caribou, who plans to attend Farmington State College of the University of Maine, in Farmington.
