Outstanding Citizen Is Honored

WASHBURN -- Ray Carter was named outstanding citizen of the year by the Washburn Rotary Club at a banquet in his honor held at the Washburn Elementary School Cafeteria Saturday evening.

Malcolm R. Holts was master of ceremonies and introduced Mr. Vavel Giggey of Fort Fairfield; James Porter of Andover, N. B. and The Honorable Clifford G. McIntire of Washington, D. C.

A citizenship plaque was presented the guest of honor by Laurel W. Thompson. Holts read congratulatory messages from friends, family members and government officials.

Carter is a graduate of the University of Maine, Orono, a former coach and agriculture teacher at Fort Fairfield and has been a certified seed grower in Washburn area for many years. He has held many offices in charitable and religious organizations and is a member of the First Baptist Church here.

He is now retired and he and his wife, Mavis, reside on South Main Street.

The Carter family members who attended were Mrs. Carter, Mr. and Mrs. William Harvey and Mark, of Gardnier, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Kaler, of Boothbay Harbor and Mr. and Mrs. James Carter, Washburn.

Other guests were Rotary District Governor, Wallace Campbell of Fort Fairfield, Mrs. Marian Warman, of Presque Isle, Mrs. Vavel Giggey, Fort Fairfield, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Page, Caribou, Mrs. James Porter, at Andover, N.B., and the Rev. and Mrs. Carmina Centineo.

Approximately one hundred Rotarians and guests attended.
