Johnson, Parker Winning Speakers

WASHBURN -- Mr. and Mrs. Bill Johnson of Washburn hosted a festive fondue supper here Saturday evening, May 6 [1972] for members of the Washburn District High School junior class. Co-hostesses were Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Parker.

The festive party celebrated the high school speaking contest held Friday evening, and was the beginning of an evening's activities for Junior Prom goers.

Taking the winning contest trophies were the Johnson's daughter, Avis, and Bruce Parker, Avis' winning speech was "Any Junior's Nightmare," while Parker won with "How To Woo And Win A Woman."

The two trophy winners placed first in the contest which featured ten speakers. Mrs. Gary Cole and Timothy Humphrey were contest directors for this year's event.

Participating in the contest were Barbara Flewelling with a selection from Spoon River Anthology; Carol Tarbox, "A Cafeteria Queen"; Linda Tardie, "The Seven Worst Things About Men"; and Ed ward Maynard, "The Image Of Old Glory."

Other speakers included Theren Hartsgrove, who placed second with "Huckleberry Finn's Cure For Warts"; Mike Sperry, a selection from Spoon River Anthology"; Ruth Borden, who placed second with excerpts from "Romeo and Juliet"; and Kenneth Wilcox, "Marijuana."

Following the fondue supper, members of the junior class left for their junior prom at the Caribou Hotel.

Fondue Supper Greets Junior Class

Members of the Washburn District High School Junior Class turned out in their formal evening wear for a fondue supper hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Bill Johnson of Washburn Saturday, May 4. The supper, held at the Johnson home, featured a variety of cheese and other party fondues. The decor was strictly festive with bright balloons and streamers to greet the first warm day of spring. Special guests-of-honor at the party (pictured in the right photo) were Washburn speaking contest winners Avis Johnson and Bruce Parker. Among the other 50 guests sampling the fondue were, from left, Ken Wilcox, Beth Arculeo, Michael Dickinson, Avis Johnson and Dalean Whitten.
