The announcement by Principal Dana F. Hews revealed Ruth Ann Borden, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harley C. Borden of Rt. 1, Caribou, as the salutatorian.
Blackstone is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Blackstone Sr. of Perham. He has participated in basketball for three years, is a member of the National Honor Society, was a Dirigo Boys' State delegate, a member of the yearbook staff, a member of the French Club and a member of the soccer team. He has been admitted to Bob Jones University, Greenville., S.C. in September, where he will major in Business Administration.
Miss Borden has been class secretary for two years, secretary of the Journalism Club for three years, a member of the high school band for four years, principal's office assistant for two years, and a member of the French club. She participated in freshman-sophomore speaking competition for two years and placed second in Junior Exhibition speaking. She is a member of the yearbook staff, senior play cast and Future Teachers Club. She was manager of the school magazine campaign for two years. Ruth has been accepted at Northern Maine Vocational Technical Institute in Presque Isle in the two-year accounting course.
Catherine Charette, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Camille Charette of RFD 2, Presque Isle, will deliver the first honor essay. Cathy has been in the band for four years, is member of the French Club, Student Council, Dirigo Girl's State Representative, a candy counter worker, associate editor of the yearbook, magazine campaign captain, principal's office assistant, a member of the National Honor Society and participated in freshman-sophomore speaking for two years. Cathy plans to attend Pine Manor Junior College, Chetnut Hill, Mass. or Colby Junior College, in New London, N.H.
Receiving high honors is Carol Lee Tarbox, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Tarbox Sr. of Perham. Carol has been a member of Future Homemakers of America for four years, a principal's office assistant, business manager of the yearbook, a member of National Honor Society and senior play cast. She participated in freshman-sophomore speaking competition two years and was a Junior Exhibition speaker. Carol has been accepted at Northern Maine Vocational Technical Institute in Presque Isle in the two-year accounting program.
Members of the class achieving honors who were presented with medals and certificates during the assembly were: Dennis L. Drost, son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Drost Sr., who has applied to Northern Maine Vocational Technical Institute in Presque Isle in the carpentry program. Dennis has played soccer and intramurals.
Ervin Ewing, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Ewing of RFD 1, Caribou, who has also applied to Northern Maine Voc. In Presque Isle for the electrical construction program. He has participated in soccer and the Industrial Arts Club and has had perfect attendance for two years.
Barbara Jean Laskey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willis E. Laskey, who has been accepted in the Elementary Education Program at University of Maine at Presque Isle. Barbara has been a member of the band for four years, a member of the French Club, Tri-Hi-Y, Future Teachers Club and yearbook staff.
Bridget McIntosh, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe McIntosh of Wade, who has been accepted in the Liberal Arts-Foreign Language program at University of Maine at Presque Isle. Bridget has participated in girls softball, cheerleading, French Club, Tri-Hi-Y and Dramatics Club. She has been a band member for four years, a member of the Student Council, manager of the baseball team, magazine campaign captain, Dirigo Girls State representative and is president of the Student Council.
Michael L. Maynard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Maynard, Sr. of Wade, has been a member of the soccer team for four years, basketball team for four years, played volleyball two years and was in intramurals for three years. He is a member of the Varsity Club.
Melody Silver, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Archie Silver of Wade, has been a band member for tour years, a Tri-Hi-Y member for four years, participated in girls softball, track volleyball, JV cheerleading, freshman-sophomore speaking, yearbook staff, magazine campaign; has been a candy counter worker, class vice president, a member of the National Honor Society and participated in the summer program for high school juniors at University of Maine at Orono. Melody plans to attend Tufts University School of Occupational Therapy in Medford, Mass. or University of Maine, Orono-College of Arts and Science.
Linda Marie Tardie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edmond Tardie of Crouseville has been a band member for all four years a JV and Varsity cheerleader, a member of the softball team, French Club, yearbook staff, Tri-Hi-Y club, Dramatics Club, Senior Play and participated in intramurals. She was a Tri-Hi-Y representative at Model State Legislature, a principal's office assistant and a Junior Exhibition speaker. Linda plans to seek a secretarial position in the area.
Dalean Whitten, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Whitten, has been accepted at Northern Maine Vocational Technical Institute in Presque Isle in the one year computer programmer course. During Dalean's first two years at Bethel High School, Bethel, Conn. she was a majorette, a cheerleader and a member of the tennis team and the Science Club. During her last two years, at Washburn District High School, she was a cheerleader and a member of the Co-ed Hi-Y Club.
Kenneth Wilcox, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Wilcox, RFD 1, Washburn has been accepted at the University of Maine at Presque Isle in the Liberal Arts pre-med. program. Kenneth has been a band member for four years, a member of the baseball and basketball teams, Varsity Club, Hi-Y chaplain, Junior Class president, Junior Exhibition speaker and an alternate to Dirigo Boys' State.
Wallace Woodman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ellsworth Woodman has played soccer, JV basketball and baseball. He is a member of the Student Council, National Honor Society, Varsity Club, French Club, Science Club, Co-Ed Hi-Y and the cross country team.
Hews remarked to the assembly of students and parents that 23 members of the 43-member class have applied to various schools and colleges. Fourteen students have confirmed admission at this time.
