Washburn Hoopsters Of 1920
For those of you who have memories stretching many years into the past, here is a picture of the Washburn High School basketball team of 1920. Washburn was very successful on the courts that year but was finally beaten in Aroostook League championship play by Presque Isle's team made up by Harold McKay, Frank Foster, Raymond Kierstesd, Harold Johnston, Sidney Cook and Louis Horsman. The Washburn players are from left, front row, Malcolm Umphrey, Ray Carter and Vaughn Kilpatrick. Back row, George Ballard, Coach Carroll Wilder, Henry "Ruse" Russell and Anson Story. Ray Carter, who still lives in Washburn, tells us that Umphrey is now retired and living at Palm Beach Shores, Fla., Kilpatrick is a retired seed potato inspector and farmer, now living in Littleton. George Ballard is a retired state employe now residing in Auburn. Story is a retired auto dealer now living in Waterville, and Henry Russell is deceased. The year 1920 was the first in which out-of-county basketball teams came here to play.
