I finally managed to find a location that it liked and the I, speculatrix which Jim Waddick brought from China finally bloomed this spring. Its requirements seem to be shade, continuing dampness, and rich soil. Jim says it doesn't always grow on limestone in China, and it seems to have adapted to the slightly acid glacial soil in Seattle. It has evergreen leaves, slightly yellow green and about four inches long. Two tiny, bitone lavender flowers, the falls with an orange-yellow slash and small white signals ringed in violet, bloom in tandem on wiry 6-8 inch stems. No pods were set; probably hand pollination would be necessary.
