Safety for Surfers


Dawn at Huntington Beach and already the dawn patrol are out.

Make no mistake, the ocean is a dangerous place. What with waves, storms, rip currents, tides, and even sharks and things like jet-skis. You have to keep your eyes peeled and be able to recognise danger and take suitable action before it even materialises, and this only comes with experience and common sense. To date in Ireland, thank god, no surfer has ever been killed. Let's keep it that way. Use your head. Follow these rules and advice and you won't go far wrong.

Safety Tips Prevention is better than cure. Spotting a dangerous rip or making that hard decision not to go out if it's too big for your skill level are vital to staying safe. Mainly common sense.

First Aid for surfing Sometime in your surfing life you or someone with you is going to get hurt in the surf. You have to know what to do and what not to do to help the injured person without making things worse.

Shark advice Maybe not at home in the cooler waters of the North Atlantic, but come holiday time, or for our surfing brothers and sisters around the world, shark attack is a very real hazard. But what is one to do if confrontated by a shark?
