Safety Tips for Surfers

Try not to Surf alone.

Only surf if you can swim

If you get into difficulty, *STAY WITH YOUR BOARD!*

Learn First Aid.

Never drop in on another surfer already on the wave (see Surf Etiquette).

Get proper surf instruction (at least read the basic instruction page).

Check with local people, lifeguards or shops for any dangers - in warmer climes check for SHARKS!!

Only surf waves of a size and power suitable to your ability - don't get too confident too soon.

Make sure your equipment, especially your leash, is in good order.

Take time to learn to observe the ocean so you can identify rips, wind changes and other hazards.

Paddle around the wave breaking area, never through it. It's a hell of a lot easier and you're less likely to be involved in a collision.

Consider other water users - always check around you before abandoning your board.

After a wipeout, don't force your way to the surface too soon, and cover your head - that board can knock you out at least.

Consider wearing a helmet when surfing near rocks.

If you get caught in a rip, do not try to paddle against it - paddle across it.

Before you enter the water, take time to think safety.
