Ray (a.k.a. 007)
Not really much we can say about Ray. No one really knows much about him. Keeps pretty much to himself these days, ever since that nasty Watergate episode.
But, we know he lives in Vegas, probably just to avoid paying taxes, or just to hide out from the FBI (big difference). And we hear there's always colorful action at his house. We even heard Wayne Newton has been spotted leaving there in the wee early morning hours.
Well, we know some of Ray's hiding spots, although we're not at liberty to divulge them to you at this time, but we managed to find him one day last week, and he politely granted us a very revealing interview into his magnificent persona.
Q: Wow! You started skydiving in the early '70's, right? So, how many jumps you got by now, Ray?
A: Well, I don't really know. I had about 8800 when I stopped logging, and I guess that was around the mid to late '70's....
Q: What's so great about doing 8-way??
A: I'm not really sure. I've only done it a couple times. It's different anyway, and something to do on the weekends...
Q: So, why the heck do you compete?!
A: I'm not really sure about that, either. People just ask me if I want to, and I can't really think of a reason not to.
Q: Well, jeez, you got a bunch of Gold Medals, though, dontcha??? How many ya got?
A: Oh, I don't know. I got a few I guess. Maybe 7 or 8. But they're only for stupid stuff like freestyle and 10-way. They're kinda meaningless.
Q: Got a favorite block, Ray?
A: Hell NO! I don't even do that shit! I'm just happy if those guys stay in the frame. I hate it when they make me work, flying up and down, all over the place. I wish they'd just do it right.
Q: Yeah, I know what you mean. It's tough to find any real talent out there. So, what was your most memorable skydive?
A: Oh, that's an easy one. It has to be Harry Leicher's 2000th jump. The thing was almost complete, and Harry's supposed to dump out at about five grand, and there he is, waiting to pull out, and there's Steve Fielding, low and out, huggin' the ol' beach ball in the most narly dead spider you ever saw!!! I'll never forget it.
Q: I know you have a lot of free time on your hands lately, so you must come up with just oodles of profound thoughts on skydiving.
A: Not really. Just the one: PULL. Pull before you hit the ground.
