The Planes

Pattern competition is based on piloting skills, but a nice flying plane doesn't hurt.  All pattern planes look alike, except to a pattern pilot.  Most pattern planes are very sleek looking and bear little resemblance to any full size airplane.  There are agreed upon rules governing the form of the plane.  This, more or less, puts the competitors on an even footing, since bigger planes fly smother. 

According to the rule book, a pattern plane must:

  • Have a wingspan less than 78 3/4 inches (2 meters)

  • Have a overall length less than 78 3/4 inches

  • Have an unfuelled weight less than 11 pounds (5 kg)
