Founded: November 1, 1971 by Gary L. Davidson as the San Francisco SeaHawks of the World Hockey Association.
The San Francisco SeaHawks was the Bay Area's addition to the World Hockey Association. Founders Gary L. Davidson and Dennis A. Murphy thought that this move by granting a franchise to San Francisco would gain some media attention to the team and the league. They also believed that the San Francisco SeaHawks and the Los Angeles Aces could strike a rivalry similar to the one that the Oakland Seals and the Los Angeles Kings of the NHL made. Unfourtunately with hockey not selling well with the Seals, the Sharks believed staying in the Bay Area may look bad on the league so they decieded to move. The team was purchased on Feburary 11, 1972 to Paul Racine and Jean Lesage. The two then moved the team to Quebec and renamed them the Nordiques (Northerners).
