Hi, being a son of one of the players,i have story you might like.My
father was the late Bill Speer.and when the team was the Golden blades
there skate blades were dipped in real gold.So after a skate sharpening
the players were collecting the gold fibers off of the machine and were
getting jewerly made from the fibers. Also i still have his purple
pants. Bill Speer Jr.
Just found your page and it was a great trip down memory lane. Thought I
might have a few tibits for you on the Knights home rink. Yes,it only seated
4,000 and had wood benches but did you know there was no plexiglas anywhere
around the rink? Behind the goals and into the corners was chainlink fencing
and along the sides was wide open spaces. This little rink was also the best
place I ever watched a game, not only were the pucks in your face but so
were the sticks and the players. For 5 bucks you got to sit in the front
roowww and see the likes Hull and the Howes and more action then one could
ever imagine.I also liked the icing rule on the power play..Keep up the good
work. Joe Corallo
I remembered the time when, as part of the Fan Club, I
helped organize a Blazers Booster Club bus trip to Madison Square Garden. We
were going to see the New York Knights. Between the 2nd and 3rd periods, I
was involved in a major fight that resulted in our getting a police guard and
escort out of the Garden. I would like to state, for the record, that I did
not start the fight. A group of us were walking around the Garden with a
LONG banner I made for the occasion. (Banners were my specialty). Someone
threw a pair of pants over my head and then the next thing I knew, there was
total chaos. Fights were everywhere. When the NY police arrived in our
midst, we were escorted to our seats where we were to remain for the duration
of the game. No one was allowed to leave-even to use the restroom. At the
conclusion of the game, we had to march 2 by 2's as the police escorted us to
the buses and basically told us we were not welcomed back again. It was so
unfair!!! New York fans started it!!!!! We got the short end of the stick!!!
Justice prevailed the following year, though, when the New York Knights
moved to the old Cherry Hill Arena and became the Jersey Knights. I guess
they couldn't stand the Garden either! Kathy "Kellogg" Robarge
When I was a kid, My two friends and I would go to see the New York
Raiders/Golden Blades at Madison Square Garden. We noticed, during one
game, that a New York Player named Craig Reichmuth was nocked
down to th eice and as the oppossing player skated away, Reichmuth slashed
at him with his stick. AFter the game we waited outside the garden and met
Craig Reichmuth in person. We pesterd him and badgered him until he agreed
to give us tickets to the following weeks game. In order to get rid of us,
he agreed. He told us to meet him in front of the players entrance before
the game. The next week we did just that and he told us he would leave
tickets for us at the box office. Sure enough, they were there. This
became a regular event. We soon became friends with Craig along with Brian
Bradley and a few other players. We even went out to Craigs house in New
Jersey and played golf with him. He gave us pucks and sticks. When the
team moved to Cherry Hill New jersey, we lost contact with the guys.
A side note. Ex-Yankee pitcher Fritz Peterson used to do the color
commentary for the Raiders. One day before the game Fritz arrived with a
very lovely woman. We said "Hi, Mrs. Peterson." To which she replied, "I'm
not Mrs. Peterson, I'm Mrs Kekich". We sort of figured something was going
on. We found out shortly afterwards that the two pitchers had switched
wives. Weiss, Paul
