I want to know why skateboarding is so illegal in Santa Cruz. I understand that if there are a bunch of kids standing around in front of a store or shop skateboarding can detract from the business because of fear. Not that there is really anything to fear. Skateboarding is just a hobby that happens to be a little dangerous and a little loud. I think that if Santa Cruz wants to protect the elderly from flying skateboards and the loud sound of trucks grinding it should instigate a law like they have in Boulder, Colorado. In Boulder you can’t do aerial skateboarding. Which means that you can’t have all four of your wheels off the ground at any time. This seems like a sensible law. What is not a sensible law is making it illegal to use the skateboard as a form of transportation in our way too politically correct city that shuns everyone that gets in a car. How does the city expect us to get anywhere if you can’t drive and you can’t skate? The only option left is to bike. I thought that Santa Cruz was all about diversity. How diverse is only being able to bike anywhere? What it sounds like is that Santa Cruz is being completely hypocritical. The other problem with making skateboarding illegal in Santa Cruz is that Santa Cruz is a classic surf/skate town. Has the city council never heard of Santa Cruz skateboards or O’Neill? These two companies are world-wide companies that advertise like crazy Because of our sweatshirts and skateboards Santa Cruz High’s quad gets know as the place to skate in California. It goes from being just another town to one that is on the map. People want to come to Santa Cruz to find out what it is all about. This must be good for our economy. Making skateboarding illegal in a classic skate town is taking away the soul of the town. I guess what the kids of today should do instead of skate around with out causing any trouble is go and smoke a fatty bowl of weed. That’s logical right? Just about as logical as taking away an environmentally friendly form of transportation and hobby on which our city was founded.
