Brian M. Hailey: A Portrait of Strings
Brian Matthew Hailey, guitarist for Flying Verbal, was born July 11, 1979 at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland, just outside Washington DC. His family moved soon after his birth and he ended growing up in Deer Park, Washington, a small town about fifteen miles north of Spokane, WA. During his freshman year of high school at Gonzaga Preparatory School in Spokane, he taught himself to play on his father's acoustic guitar. With some help from his father and his brother Michael, he soon became fluent in his guitarwork. At age 16, he got his first guitar, a '95 Fender Stratocaster. After graduating from Gonzaga Prep, he went on to study chemistry and history at Seattle University, where his original freepicking style started to stand out. This style, coupled with a talented songwriting ability look to give Flying Verbal a benovolent future. Hailey prides this unique style and varying sounds on his wide range of influences. These include The Dave Matthews Band, The Screaming Trees, Dream Theater, Rush, The Tragically Hip, Better Than Ezra, Rusted Root, Journey, Pearl Jam, Boston, Smashing Pumpkins, Van Halen, et al. All music in Flying Verbal was written by Hailey. A collaborated effort was made in the writing of the lyrics of "Missing Her", "Bummed", and "Catchtwentytwo".
