LGRC Junior Rowing Traditions
Black Velvet Dinner:
This is a special event for rowers and coaches to celebrate the opening of the rowing season. It is held at the home of Head Coach Skip Braatz. Rowers are encouraged to dress for evening. Women have worn long dresses or other going out to dinner attire. Men have worn suits or just shirts & ties without jackets. Some teams will plan something special - all in red, all in black..... Rowers will receive flyer on date, time and location. Each team is asked to bring certain food items.
Junior Representatives
:Head Coach selects 2 junior rowers to represent the junior team at the Board of Directors Meeting.
Row-a-Thon:
This is the one major fund raising event for the general support of the club. The junior rowers and their families are asked to participate by securing pledges for the rowers (much like a walk-a-thon) from friends, relatives, neighbors.... The co-chairs of the event will be a rower from the Masters Program and a Junior Rowers Parent. Together they will ask for other masters and junior parents to assist with handing out forms, encouraging junior participation to reach team goals, and staffing food and club-logo sales at the event. The date for the row-a-thon coincides with the Great Race (usually early to mid February).
LGRC Booster Club:
The club consists of parents of junior rowers for the purpose of supporting various junior program activities and needs. To successfully provide all the services the rowers and coaches so appreciate, all parents are asked to serve on at least one committee and assist at the S.W. Championships.
Housing Visiting Teams
:Rowers’ families are asked to house visiting teams from out of the bay area if they come to race at our site. Other teams reciprocate with hospitality and housing for our rowers when we travel.
Coach Gifts
:As with all teams and clubs, the rowers and their families wish to thank the coaches at the end of the season. Each team: Novice Men, Novice Women, JV/Varsity Men and JV/Varsity Women organizes themselves to collect for gifts and decide what they would like to present. Gifts are usually given to coaches at the End of the Season Awards Dinner.
