Santana 35 Fleet News #1 - 9/9/00 (sent via email)

This is the first of a new approach at conducting some fleet business via email.  This will not replace the Fall and Spring fleet meetings to decide important topics, such as one-design rules, ratifying schedules, etc.  It is simply a forum to facilitate discussions and help Santana 35s get together more often.

I’d like to put forth a couple reminders with an email alias this big:

·         Keep group emails as short and infrequent as possible.  Keep them fun and interesting.
·         If possible, just reply to the sender on a topic.  I’m always happy to consolidate replies on questions and send the results out all at once.
·         Think carefully before sending mail, particularly on contentious issues, to the whole fleet.  Do not flame, argue, or berate others with the whole fleet on the email.  If a thread gets long, work on it with just those interested.

I’ll send out separate emails immediately following to address the 2001 season race dates and the Fall meeting agenda.

Santana 35 email list

The website fleet roster is the primary source of correct information about boats and email addresses.  I’ll include any contact information you’d like to have on the website there (including phone #s, sail #s, etc).  Take a look at www.santana35.com/fleet_roster.html to verify that your information is correct (for now just boat name, owner, and email address are listed).

At the top of the Fleet Roster on the website are two hyperlinks.

“Click to send email to the fleet officers”, and
“Click to send email to the whole fleet”

These make it easy to send email to the right folks.  Currently, everyone on this mail comprises the “whole fleet”, and these are the boats listed under “Active Members”.  A second reminder to use discretion before sending email to the whole fleet.

Some guidelines that might help:

·         Send questions about race start times, locations, rule changes, etc just to the fleet officers.  If you want them to send the reply to the whole fleet, just say so.
·         Send offers for a fun sail (you are going out and want S35 company) to the whole fleet!
·         Don’t reply to the whole fleet unless you think it’s very relevant for everyone.
