Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Directed by George A. Romero

Produced by Italian master of gore Dario Argento,
Dawn of the Dead is the second effort in the serie of the Dead from Romero. Detracted by many, Romero shows more than flesh and blood in his films comparing to Fulci's works of violence and bad special effects.

In
Dawn of the Dead, Romero shows how people are slaves of the consommation market and how this leads to an empty life of possesions and materialism. Even the fun they were having at first in the shopping mall they couldn't live anymore in this artificial recreation of life. Even if they think all their needs are fulfilled they couldn't find happiness. Cause from the start they were doomed. People are represented by the Dead who walks in the mall with no other preoccupation than eating flesh of the living. Ironically to kill a zombie you have to destroy his brain... Well, to me these people don't even need one...

From being a cult movie about zombies, Dawn analyze the changes the society had and the problems contained in it. Dawn blame the consommation cycle that is over everyone's head and that turns our brains into a materialist owning device that tells us only one verb to have! Some current themes are coming back from
Night of the Living Dead like the racism, isolation and the conformism always more and more omnipresent.

Reading Romero's Dead serie is very interesting on the social point of view.
Someone called Darwin once said Men are related with Monkeys, Romero answered
Zombies are related with Men...
