Clontibret
O'Neills were this week celebrating another win - after the prominent
mid-Monaghan scooped an AIB Club of the Year Award.
Member's
of the O'Neill's club - including Secretary Frank McManus and
Development Officer Kieran Lavelle collected their County Award
and 634.87 euro cheque at a special function in Croke Park on Monday
last.
The
provincial award for Ulster was won by Down club Clonduff, with the
national award going to Eire Og from Carlow.
The
club is the very bedrock of the GAA and the Club of the Year scheme,
sponsored by AIB Bank is designed to acknowledge and reward the
vast amount of work that is done by so many people in so many voluntary
capacities across the county. GAA clubs provide great facilities
for the youth of the county and these facilities have been provided
without financial assistance from the state or any other funding agency
and it is that type of work that is taken into consideration when
deciding on the recipients of the AIB awards at county and national
level.
As
an example of a vibrant club, Clontibret is there with the best of them,
a dual club fostering football and hurling, the excellent facilities at
O'Neill Park, although they could be forgiven for a little cynicism
given the recent debate over crowd capacity for national league games, a
new club house and development plans for their training pitch that will
provide even more facilities for the promotion of the games.
The
club also fields teams in all competitions, they put Minor Championship
titles back to back last year for the first time and came within an ace
of winning the Ulster Minor Club Championship in Belfast, proof that
there is a good under age policy in the club. There was no
Championship silverware last year but they won the Brennan Cup and
reached the final of the U21 league division one and as well as their
Minor Championship triumph they also won the 15 Lee Bros. Cup.
