Clontibret - AIB Club of the
Year in Monaghan
Publication: Anglo Celt
Date: 7th February 2002
The
club is acknowledged as the bedrock of the GAA and the Club of the Year
scheme, sponsored by AIB Bank is designed to acknowledge and reward to
vast amount of work that is done by so many people in so many voluntary
capacities right across the country.
GAA clubs provide facilities for the youth of the country and in all
cases these facilities were provided without financial assistance from
the state or any other funding agency and that type of work is also
taken into consideration when deciding on the recipients of the awards
at county and national level.
As examples of vibrant clubs go Clontibret is a shining example, a dual
club fostering football and hurling, an excellent home in O'Neill Park,
although they could be forgiven for a little cynicism given the recent
debate over crowd capacity for national league games, a new club house
and development plans for their training pitch that will provide even
more facilities for the promotion of the games.
The awards were presented at a special function in Croke Park on Monday
last but no higher award for Clontibret with the provincial award going
to Down club Clonduff, and the national award going to Eire Og from
Carlow.
The Clontibret club was represented by club secretary Frank McManus and
Development Officer Kieran Lavelle.
