In 1998, the Gaston Thunder Organization started with one team in the 12 & Under age group. The girls where selected from Gaston county and surrounding areas. The girls were selected based upon their skill, but mostly selected because of their good attitudes, strong commitment to the team, and a willingness to work hard to make themselves better players. The team played in only USSSA sanctioned tournaments in that first year. The team's biggest achievement in 1998 was when they ended their season as the USSSA RECREATIONAL STATE CHAMPIONS!

In 1999, that same 12 & Under age group team played in both NSA and USSSA sanctioned tournaments. The team had a great season as they played in 9 tournaments and finished with an overall record of 49 wins and 14 losses. The team's results looked like this:

• 3rd Place – USSSA Piedmont Open
• 1st Place – NSA Memorial Day Classic
• 2nd Place – NSA NC Western Divisional
• 1st Place – USSSA Awards Express Invitational
• 6th Place – NSA NC State Championship
• 2th Place – Gaston Regional Championship
• 1st Place – NSA NC National Invitational
• 35th out of 95 – NSA World Series
• 2nd Place – NSA Virginia East Coast Clash
