AERIALS: As the name sounds, aerials are performed in the air before turning back downward and re-entering the ramp of the halfpipe. In an aerial, a competitor rides straight up the side of the halfpipe and launches into the air at the end where he completes a 180, 360, 540, 720 or 900 degree turn.

LIP TRICK: These are performed at the top edge of the halfpipe, where the rider catches the "pegs" along the edge, or bounces along the lip, doing various freestyle tricks mostly adapted from "Flatland" riding.

TRICKS: There are so many tricks (new ones are invented at every competition), that there is no way to give names to all of them. Here are a few of the most popular:

Bus Driver: A one handed bar spin keeping on one of the handle bars as it is turned.

Can-Can: One foot or both feet (double Can Can) off the pedals making kicking motions.

Fakey: In vert, where the rider goes backward down the ramp.

Superman: Hands on the bars, feet off the pedals and behind off the seat.

Toboggan: One hand on a handlebar, one hand on the seat, both feet on and behind hanging over the back wheel.

VERT: What Freestylers call the halfpipe event. The halfpipe is entered from a platform that the competitor rides down and into a transition area before launching up the side.
