The 2009 ALCA Sail-N-Soak Regatta Dates Set!
Dave Stiemsma has already volunteered to be the 2009 ALCA Regatta Chairman.
The 2008 ALCA Sail-N-Soak a huge success!
With Dave Stiemsma as the Regatta Chairman and Andy Lenczycki as the Race Committee Chairman, the Austin Lake Regatta went off without a hitch. Saturday had 5 solid races with winds that started at 5-10 MPH and built to 15-20. A variety of race course numbers were employed, including the popular A-C with gates courses and a course 7 (ACABCAC) to finish off the day (for us 'old-timers' that remember an ABC type course). The Open fleet boats (Tiger, H16 Solos, and H18's) got to run an extra A-C lap each race to minimize the between-race wait time. There was seldom a delay of more than 10 minutes between races, and that was usually to allow the awesome course adjustment team of David and Austin Lee to tweek the course marks as needed to keep things interesting. Sailors were off the water by 3 PM in time to partake in hot tubbing for relaxation. Jerry and Lori Mohney hosted the dinner on Saturday night with lots of great food supplied by fleet members and the fleet and a keg that lasted into Sunday! A slide show of (669!) pictures taken from the committee boat was displayed during the night for all participants to marvel at just how great they look on the water (and Myles and Audree IN the water)! Near sunset, everyone was treated to a phenomenal, DOUBLE rainbow that extended from one shore of Austin Lake, to the other. It remained visible for almost 20 minutes.
Sunday started out a little slower, with a 1 hour delay due to a few low hanging rain clouds, but by 11 AM the rain lifted and Race Committee got to work again. The first race started a little slow with 5-10 MPH winds, but by the second race, the wind had increased again to 10-15. The committee boat had the sailors off the water by 1:30 PM in time for everyone to meet back at Jerry & Lori Mohney's to finish off the food and beer left, and for the door prize and trophy presentations. Dave Stiemsma did a wonderful job with the laser-etched trophies, and was able to go 5 deep in both fleets! While everyone talked about the great fun they had over the weekend, Sundays pictures of the racers from the committee boat were again presented in a slide show for all to see.
For all that were there, thanks for supporting our little regatta. For all that didn't make it, plan on attending next years event!

Remember, you don't have to own a boat or EVEN sail to
be a member of ALCA. For the nominal fee of $10.00,
you can become a member of the Austin Lake Catamaran
Association. This fee is for the FUN activities for
which we have a very well organized (and inventive and
creative) party committee. For those members that do
own a catamaran and want to race, the racing
membership is an additional $20.00.
If you are interested in being part of our treasured
Race Committee personnel, we would love to have you
on the RC Boat. It's a way to be involved with the
fleet even if you don't have a catamaran. If
you are interested, contact Steve Chapman at 269-329-3221.
