The Private Pilot Certificate - The First Step Today there are more than 650,000 active pilots in the United States. Most of these pilots hold a private pilot’s certificate which is a pilot’s first goal. The first step in your Private Pilot training is the Student Pilot certificate. This requires you to be at least 16 years old and in good physical condition to acquire your medical certificate which is also your student pilot certificate. You should be able to read, understand and speak English. Duration: The time it takes to become a private pilot depends on how much time you can devote to training and what type of course you are enrolled in. A full time (8AM- 5PM) course and good preparation in theory before arriving for your training can shorten the time. The average full time course last 6 weeks. Most part time students take 6 months to a year to complete their training. Program: Self study and Ground School training starting with theory you will learn about many topics such as aerodynamics, airport operations, radio communications, aircraft systems, weather theory, weather reports, navigation, physiology and regulations. This study also helps to prepare you for the required Written Test. The practical flight time requirement is a total of 40 hours. The national average for most student pilots is 50 to 60 hours. This part consists of a minimum of 30 hours with a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) and 10 hours of flight training alone which is also known as Solo. Here you practice with your instructor and on a step by step basis you will be able to perform all flight maneuvers which makes you ready for the final exam, which is called the Check Ride. Cost: Average cost including all study material, exam fees, medical inspection, and flight training range from US$ 3500 to US$ 4500. Lower cost reflects a well prepared student with the minimum of 40 hour of flight time. Upper cost reflects a student with no pre-knowledge and 60 hours of flight time. |
