BBQ Board Bash at
Cleveland Skate Park

Redland Shire, East Brisbane

Sunday 7th November 1999

When I had a skate at Cleveland the other day, a kind local skater gave me a flier for a skate event that was happening there the very next day, so before I could put the details up on here, the day was already upon me and I decided to go down and have a look. The Sunday was rather hot with a bit of rain coming and going between sessions and demos. I think everyone was happy with what happened and they cheered the bands and the skaters alike. I had to go to work before the mighty deck and product toss at the end, but I am sure it would have been the usual struggle and fun.

The Kwala Skate Team (and friends) were the star attractions of the day, as well as the bands playing and the bbq tent being very popular - free sausages, of course! There were other things there, one of them being a mobile video game arcade kind of thing, but I didn't go near that side of the place. From Kwala, Ben Ventress and Scott Shearer were showing everyone how well they could skate, with many inovative and new tricks as well as the usual airs, flips, grinds, slides and what not. If you can picture this: Scott was on fire, getting b/s ally oop nollie flips over the main bank hip, b/s k/flip tail slides and switch f/s ollie to tail slides to fakie out on the big block. Ben just casually ripped the whole place, b/s nose grinds along the back side of the big block, f/s smith along the front to fakie out, waist to chest high b/s k/flip to fakie over the main hip...

Other people or skaters worth a mention: Cain Stewart, a local of sorts was showing how smooth his skating style is as well as making so many good solid tricks and flips. If anyone out there should be hooked up with a skate company it would be him, cause this guy really rips. Steve Pearce is still making the hit list with many big tricks, flips and the ability to just keep on going, even after some heavy hits that would leave others down for the count. Other skaters I didn't really see much of but still ripped on the day include: Richard (from Salisbury), Jerome (Mr Fresh?), James Wheeler, Jason (?), Cameron... the list goes on with all those whose ability stands out, but their names I do not recall or know.

If anyone did take photos of the day, I would like to put them on my page. You will be credited with the pic, putting your name in Benny's hall of photo fame.
