I
really do not know much about this place.
I did skate it once in early 1999 and it had looked nicely worn in but
as to its current state, I would not know. Being right on the beach front
on the main road beside the caravan park, just behind a rather large grassed
bank, the Coolum park is very susceptible to the coastal weather. The day
I was there, it was a lovely fine day, but the kids said it often gets
windy and not a fun place to be when all the sand that is around the park
gets in bearings or eyes. It is quite close to shops, drinking fountain,
coast bus and pretty much everything you could need.
It
is to some a rather limited park, the ramps
being metal and the flat bitumen with sand always creeping over the edges
of everything, but if you think of a "T" shape, the bottom of the T being
a big quarter, about 6ft with just a folded metal edge (grindable like
a normal ramp but without coping, that is). The two arms of the T have
small quarters 3-4ft very narrow, and I think they were hipped, facing
back out into the park, but I could be wrong. I know the middle top of
the T had a 3 way quarter hip arrangement, same height and narrow width
of the side ones but with nicer transitions and the same folded metal edge
as all the rest of the ramps. It was all quite easy to skate, but at the
top of the T, the ramps are bordered in by a wooden retaining wall. This
in itself is fine, but with the ramps being so narrow, I had a couple of
near misses and at least one kid didn't land something right and went straight
into the wooden wall while I was there. They might have put some more things
in since, but with no banks, rails or other things and only quarters of
two different sizes, many people would not really want to skate there.
Hooray for the transitions and those who do skate them (like myself).
(I
have no pics of this park yet)
