Ferny Grove
Skate Park

Brisbane North West

Built: 1998?

Address: Samford Rd
(op Arbor St, just after crossing rail line)

The park at Ferny Grove has been there for quite a while now, being one of the first built in the skate boom of the ninties. Although fairly old fashioned as far as skate parks go, it has had its fair share of competitions and other events on there, with good turnouts at all times.

Being of a donut shape with an extended smaller bowl out one end, this place is all about the one height (3-4 ft) with a quarter running round the outside and a multi-sided bank making up the middle obstacle. Where the other, smaller bowl joins, there is a more gentle quarter (without coping) to use as a launch over about 1 metre to a very mellow landing bank that runs directly onto a rather steep extension on the little bowl end. From time to time, the locals have been building rails and other constructions that have made it a much more interesting place to skate, but these are mostly removed by council or taken home by some unknown skaters. (See pictures for details and a better idea of what I am trying to describe.)

The surface was originally a smooth, green coloured concrete, to minimise glare and it has worked fine for as long as I can recall. It has had various council organised recreational paint jobs and other spray paint work on it, but these have made the surface quite slippery at times. I have not been there in a while, so I couldn't say what is happening there at the present.
