Lota Skate Park

Bayside/Wynnum area

Built: 1998

How to get there:

By car: If you are driving, then Alexander St is the one to find. It is snuggled in behind the Police Citizens Youth Club, but don't be afraid, it is not behind a big barbed wire fence like in the good old days when there was the old half pipe on the same site. If you park off Bowering st and cross the foot bridge which should be right in front of you, then you cannot miss it.

By train: This is another easy one as the train line goes right past the park and stops a few short paces along the line from where you want to be. Just walk or roll back to where you saw it and get skating.

The layout: Being not so old, this is one of the first of the "new breed" of the council built skate parks. Being all of ultra smooth concrete (not to mention super bright on your eyes: drinkers beware!!!) this place will never have problems with sinking surfaces or curves not matching flat bottom. It is in the basic rectangular shape with two smallish (4ft) quarters running straight along the opposing ends, one with a roll in/bank in the middle for a bit of variation. There is a fairly wide bank with a hip in it on one side and a block sitting nicely on a very mellow bank on the other. A flat grind rail is smack bang in the middle of the huge flat expanse of bare concrete and the only other thing is a small wedge pyramid off to one side. This place doesn't have that much to skate but it is a lot of fun and mostly small enough in size to not be daunting to anyone at all.

Overview from south end
(I have drawn in the lines of the park as it was too bright to see what the ramps looked like)

Bank to basketball concrete gap ollie
(Chris Simpson shows how it is done)

Same gap - Chris melon grabs this time
(there is two to three metres of grass between)

The newest obstacle: block on a bank
(b/s nose grind by Mark ?, local)

There is some talk of a comp going on here in the near future, but I don't know when that will be or who will be holding it. Keep your ear out and you might catch it before I do, (but please tell me, so the rest of you can go along too!)
