Paddington Skate Park

Brisbane Central

Built: 1998?

Address: Caxton St (back way is Caroline St)

For all who have been to Brisbane, be it skateboarders or not, most likely you would have heard of the big park at Paddington or Milton or whatever you want to call the place we have skated day in, day out for what seems like a long time now. It was pretty much the first of the "new" parks that the Brisbane City Council built since skating progressed from the "mini ramp era" of the eighties to the more street orientated setups of skate parks we are all so familiar with today.

The old ramp at the P.C.Y.C.

Originally, the suburb Paddington had a metal framed, ply surfaced mini ramp of about 6 ft height and 20 ft width, that lived in the P.C.Y.C. across the road from the current location. When the "skate park" was built, this ramp was resurfaced in metal (to make it last), and placed in the nice little niche that the current half pipe is in. The rest of the ramps and obstacles were then built up around it to make the park suitable for all types of skating at the time. Even now, there is still a small crowd there on the weekends or after school, but much of the focus from that park has been drawn away to the newer (and more up to date) places that are popping up all over the city.

One of the many Pro Demos, this one the E's team, Eric Kosten f/s ollie. I took this one from the roof of the pool change rooms, a nice view of everything...

Besides the half pipe, which was torn down and replaced with a bumpy concrete surfaced monstrosity, there is enough there for anyone to be happy. A bowl about 4 ft deep is located at the other end of the park, with small quarters running out from its sides. There is a good sized block ledge of two different heights running along one whole side, as well as sloping grind blocks on either side of a set of stairs, a quarter fun box, a metal spine ramp, the trademark "Paddo bank", and a couple of other obstacles that were put in as after thoughts. Also, there is the usual home built rail, box, park bench, concrete carpark block or something there to make things a little more exciting.

A friend of mine, Cameron Whitaker flip mellon grab over a bin using the little bowl end of Paddo as a launch for some serious height, while Pat Mooney looks on. When some of the pros were here, a few of them kick flipped the bin and one ollie grabbed over it, with another smaller one put sideways on top!!! Now that is getting over head high in a major way!

My brother, Paul Brimson once again showing everyone else how it is done, using the spine as a launch ramp and tweaking a mute grab to almost vertical. You have to see it to believe it!

My favourite skate park, in 1998 I went there most mornings of the week and had the place pretty much to myself before 9am. Nowdays there are so many other places to skate, I don't think I have been there for quite a few months.
