Skateboard World

Southport, 1 hr south Brisbane

Built: 1998

Address: Jackman St, Southport

Not far in from the coast, in a quiet commercial area of Southport is Queensland's biggest indoor skate park, called Skateboard World. I think it is off Jackman Street, but if you cannot find it, just drop by Skate Biz at Southport, right on the main road that runs past the shopping centre, (you can see their sign a mile away!). I have not been there for a while, so I don't know the latest news and updates of what they have, or how well it is maintained, but a lot of skaters have nicknamed the place "chip world" because if your board lands the wrong way up and hits the metal edge, you get a nice big chunk out of it. On the good side, this place was open quite long hours, 7 days a week, so anyone can go down there and have a good session.

The first lot of ramps and things they had there were quite reasonably built, but like anything that is used by skateboarders, a lot of repair work is needed to keep the ramps in good condition. When I skated the ramps, they didn't seem to be as bad as some people have said, but I did have to avoid a few holes in the surfaces and platforms. They had a vert ramp (think usual vert ramp, about 10-11ft high and very wide), a 9ft ramp, a 7ft ramp, a very tight little 5-6ft spine with vert, street obstacles including rails, quarters, launch ramps over platform to flat bank, small hips, a quarter gap quarter type of thing, and a couple of blocks with metal edges. All quite fun and challenging to the average skater.

The second lot of ramps were bought from or donated by the X-Games people, so think all big black ramps with caution yellow stripes down the sides. These ramps were quite good at the X-Games, but for extended use, many just fell to pieces and were not fixed again, so a lot of people didn't want to go back. Hearing stories of skaters using ramps and putting their foot through a hole that would normally not be there (result, twisted ankle or broken bones) was not the best publicity the people who ran the place would want circulated, but they really did not seem to care, or just did not have the funds to repair or replace the damaged sections of the park.

Check out the X-Games set up here

There has been no word of the place for some time in the circles that I travel in, but I am sure that something is still there and they are going on as per usual.
