Stafford Skate Park

North Brisbane

Built: 1997

Address:
Teevan St (cnr Appleby Rd in Keong Park)

In the Stafford area, there used to be nothing, and then there was a boom of small or private ply ramps, but now it has evened out to just have what is left at the Teevan St Youth Care centre, (corner of Appleby Rd in Keong Park) as far as I know. Although the area is fenced off, there is usually a gate open to the outside, round the back of the facility. We always parked on Teevan St and jumped the fence, but if you are not that way inclined, then just make your way casually round the fence until you come to a gap or a gate. There is a drink fountain there, a service station just down the road and a few shops close by, as well as public transport, so you have no excuse not to go there for a skate.

The first ply ramp came and went, along with the street area, but now there is a small tight metal half pipe (4ft high, 10ft wide) under a sun shade. Watch out for rocks around the ramp, as well as the surface itself, being painted metal, where the paint has worn off, it is quite slippery too. The most fun I have seen had there was by some psycho local kid who repeatedly jumped off the platform rail and went down the transition on his belly, superman style and then on his back, feet first. I would not like to have to wash his clothes or clean the blood off the ramp if he missed his launch...

Me - fakie ollie on the slippery ramp whilee the psyco kid watches on.

Certainly a strange feature, the street area seems to be a quite well thought out affair that never quite made it off the drawing board. The best feature is a smallish block (1ft high, 3ft wide and 10-15ft long) with the usual good square metal edge and very smooth top for board slides as well as grinds. Other features include a small bowl end with no lip running round into a hip that is good to ollie over, a very mellow little bump, with platform of about 3ft round, (the whole thing would hardly even be noticed if you didn't pay close attention to where you were rolling), a small bumpy, lumpy quarter 1-2ft high, with coping and a couple of bench obstacles which are better for skating on than half the park is.
