The Gap Skate Park

North West Brisbane

Built: 1980's to 1998

Address:
Waterworks Rd cnr Glenaffric St (Walton Bridge Reserve)

From the eighties, there has been a small bowl (2ft high) in The Gap area, located on Waterworks Rd, at a small shopping centre on the corner of Glenaffric Street (in the Walton Bridge Reserve). The bowl in itself is quite good, with one side in particular being a good "trick quarter", as in the side you do all your tricks on. There have been two sizable additions to the park since the initial bowl was built.

The first is a concrete bank set into the slope off one side of the bowl, fairly gentle, long and good to use as a typical bank ramp, eg. roll up it, kickflip, roll back down. It also gives you a run up to the bowl, sometimes too much speed, but certainly enough to use the opposite side of the bowl as a launch ramp and get a fair height out of it.

The second is rather surprising, but good all the same. From out of nowhere, the council decided to build a concrete halfpipe in the ground beside the existing bowl. It stands at 5ft high and very wide, 20ft maybe, but has quite tight transitions, making it hard for those who are used to the mellow little bowl beside it. Skaters who are used to good curves will like this place, being excellent for slides, grinds on the metal coping, and side to side runs, not just the usual straight up backwards and forwards that most narrow ramps allow. Having all three ramps in a line, it gives a lot more run up room to go at the bank or come back the other way to ollie down from the top of the halfpipe to its flatbottom, like a set of stairs or a big gap. When we were there, a few locals were clearing it, and one fresh kid ollied from the start of the new ramp (right over the 3ft flat of platform, the 5ft down of transition, and 4-5 ft of flatbottom) and almost landed on the opposite transition on the other side, still managing to stay on his board and jump out on the other platform. This is no small gap and gives the park something from street and ramp styles of skating without having a big street setup.
