Tugun Skate Ramps

1-2 hrs south of Brisbane

Built: 1980's

Address: Boyd St (beside Cooloongatta Airport)

Right at the end of the runway for the Cooloongatta Airport are the two old ramps that have been there since the early days of skateboarding. Boyd Street that runs by the park that they are in, is just off the main coast road that would take you from Surfers Paradise all the way down to Tweed Heads. There was a shelter built quite a few years ago to accomodate the need for shade, and I think there is still a drink fountain and maybe even toilets nearby. Shops and everything else is a fair way to walk but not too far by car, across the main road and just down the way.

The concrete ramps are set up beside each other, in such a way that you can manual across the platform from one to the other but not air the gap between them. Both have roll ins at one end, the bigger one being very tight in transition 5ft high, while the smaller one 4ft being much more lumpy and sloping down one end to flat. They have been repainted too many times to remember and resurfaced at least once, maybe twice to get rid of most of the bumps, but it has been so long since I was there that I would not know what they are like any more or what has happened to them.
