Roxette

    The Beginning

Roxette are Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle. They started out leading separate solo careers. Per was more successful at first with his band Gyllene Tider while Marie was a struggling solo artist, and then the roles got reversed and Marie was the successful one while Per's solo career wasn't really taking off. Chance got them to meet up - Per wanted to do a song with Marie - and the combination of Per's music and Marie's vocals was so successful that they teamed up full-time to create Roxette (a name stolen from a Dr. Feelgood song).

    Pearls of Passion

Their first album together, Pearls of Passion, was mainly made up of duets and achieved a moderate amount of success in Sweden but not really anywhere else (and their goal at the time was to become a major group internationally). The album was re-released in 1998.

    Look Sharp

"Look Sharp!!" was their next album in 1988 (two years after P.o.P). This album was their Big Break - and the way it got to the top of the charts internationally has something of the legend about it. The Look, the first track off "Look Sharp!" was an instant hit in Sweden and an American tourist liked it and happened to take a copy of it back to the US. There, he sent it in to the local radio--they played the song, it became an hit within weeks and that without the duo even knowing it!! It reached the #1 spot in the US, Europe and Asia simultaneously and prompted them to release their second single off that album, Listen to your Heart. This is TOTALLY a different type of song, not at all like The Look and it proved that the group had versatility. You might also have heard of Dressed for Success, also from the "Look Sharp!" album, and a hit on dance floors everywhere (you'll love this song if you love to dance).

    Joyride

The most successful album to date is Joyride, an album that is full of power and emotion. The title track was their third #1 in the US and hit the top of the charts all over the place (way back in 1991). They released a treasure of songs from this one - Fading Like a Flower, Spending My Time, The Big L, Church of Your Heart.
> If you enjoy power ballads then you should try Spending My Time, Things Will Never Be the Same and Fading Like a Flower. If you enjoy pure undadulterated power, then go for Hotblooded, Physical Fascination and I Remember You.

    Tourism

After the success of "Joyride", Roxette decided to test their popularity by taking a world tour (again in 1991 and 1992). Over a million fans worldwide came to watch their concerts and enjoy the thrill of total music. They managed to do some recording while they were touring and released Tourism in 1992. There were only two singles released from this album, How do you do!! and Queen of Rain.

    Rarities (compilation)

The Rarities album has some good stuff - Fingertips '93 (a song they released as a single), One is such a lonely number(an awfully sweet song that's cool to listen to), The Sweet Hello, the Sad Goodbye (that's one song, by the way), among others. It also has tracks from the MTV Unplugged session (they never did release an Unplugged album).

    Crash! Boom! Bang!

In 1994, after a two year hiatus, Roxette released Crash!Boom!Bang! This was an album in which the sound of the band had developed from the power type thing to an older, more mature sound. The critics didn't like this one much, but it has some wonderful stuff in it. For dance there's Sleeping In My Car and Fireworks, for love there's Run To You, Go To Sleep, Love is All (Shine your light), What's She like? and Vulnerable, for guitars try Harleys and Indians (Riders in the sky), Do you wanna go the whole way and I love the sound of smashing guitars and then there is the title track which is a power ballad. I'm Sorry doesn't really fit into any of the categories, but listen to it anyway!!

Don't Bore Us, Get to the Chorus!! (Compilation)

For those of you who don't think you'll ever be huge fans of Roxette but like some of their songs, Roxette released a greatest hits album called Greatest Hits: Don't Bore Us, Get to the Chorus!! late '95, early '96. It has golden ones from each of their previous albums (except P.o.P) plus four new tracks, all of which are good. The particularly good ones are ballads , I Don't Wanna Get Hurt and You Don't Understand Me. June Afternoon is a "happy happy" song while She Doesn't Live Here Anymore is another guitar thing (with a very catchy tune).

    Balladas en Espanol (Compilation)

Album Balladas en Espanol, a collection of their best ballads in Spanish (well, it makes sense, there's an entire continent and a whole load of countries that have spanish-speaking populations).

    World accordind to Gessle

    (Solo album of Per)
In the spring 1997 Per release The World According To Gessle, a tough power-pop solo album. For the singles Do You Wanna Be My Baby? and Kix he recruits up and coming video director Jonas Kerlund, whose innovative and controversial work causes much debate and interest.

    Have a nice day

The most recent of their albums is Have a nice day. One may notices that there are very few guitars on this album, but that Marie sings better than ever. "Crush On You" looks like almost techno, "You Can't Put Your Arms Around What's Already Gone" is a classic 80's dance track and "7twenty7" a song a`la Depeche Mode in 1986.

    Small Talk

Marie is married to Micke Bolyos (also a musician) and has a daughter and a son. Her daughter was born in 1993 (she was nine months pregnant when they recorded Almost Unreal) and her son was born late last year. She still has a solo career, my favourite songs are from Den standiga resan, Mellan sommar och host (worth listening to) and Sa stilla sa langsamt.

Per is also married (not to Micke Bolyos...), to Asa Nordin, his girlfriend of about nine years. In August 1997, Per and Asa become parents to their son, Gabriel. Per also has a solo career side by side to his Roxette one.
