The Millennium train was introduced into service on 1 July 2002. The current contracts with EDI Rail are for 81 carriages (D1001-D1041 & N1501-N1540) and 60 carriages (D1043-D1072 & N1543-N1572).  It is possible that a further 60 carriages will be ordered.

The new carriages have replaced the Tulloch trailers built in 1964/1966 and will cater for new growth requirements due to expansions to the CityRail network and increased patronage.

A number of first and second series ComEng power cars have been converted to trailers.  This has helped to make up the shortfall in trailer cars since the Tulloch trailers were withdrawn from service.

These photos were taken by Paul Turtle on 19 July 1999 when the mock-up was displayed at Clyde.

Adam Peters has some excellent photos of the Millennium train along with details of Tulloch withdrawals and ComEng conversions

David Johnson also has loads of great photos of M1
The Millenium train will feature special doorway lighting.

When the passenger doors open, ceiling mounted lights illuminate the door treadplate and adjacent platform area.
