Large boulders made of limestone form the sanctuary for may creatures in the deep. These formations called haystacks rise above the silt bottom to form the substrate for sessile creature like seawhips, hard corals and sponges.
They get their name from their resemblance to large haystacks in a field. Haystacks can be as tall as 100 feet and prove as navigational aids to sub pilots.
Their age is determined by the amount of erosion that is evident in the form of fenestration's (Swiss cheese appearance). They are thought to have broken from the three hundred foot level, an area that was once the shoreline for the islands during the last ice age. |
